Race and Ethnicity Forms Due Friday, March 19

Your child was recently given a form for you to fill out and return that asks for your child’s race and ethnicity. The collection of this information is mandated by the federal government, which has revised the criteria of these data. A letter of explanation was included with the form but more information can be found on the PWCS Web site.

Please complete parts A and B of the form (with a #2 pencil), sign and date it at the bottom (in pen), and return it to your homeroom class by Friday, March 19th.

As called for in the new federal requirements, if the forms are not completed by parents/guardians, then a PWCS staff member will observe and select racial and ethnic categories on the student’s behalf. These data are being collected for students in grades PK-8 right away, since we will begin scheduling elementary and middle school students for the 2010-11 school year in April.

Spirit Night at Foster's Grille March 25

Join family and friends at Foster's Grille, Thursday, March 25, 2010 for Buckland Mills' Spirit Night. Bring in your coupon or mention BMES when placing an order and Foster's Grille in Haymarket will donate a portion of the proceeds to Buckland Mills' PTO. Orders may be take-out or dine-in. Everyone enjoys a great burger and fries, so come support the Wildcats at Foster's.

Consignment Sale Scheduled for March 27

Back by popular demand - Buckland Mills Spring and Summer Consignment Sale! Our PTO has scheduled a Consignment Sale for Saturday, March 27 from 7:30am - 12:00pm. A variety of items will be available including spring and summer clothing, baby equipment, furniture, toys, home decor, sporting goods, and much more. SOL Dates

The following window has been set for 2010 SOL testing. Once the actual dates for each test are set we will post them here on the website. Please check back regularly for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade SOL test dates.

May 17 - June 11, 2010

Students and teachers have been working hard in class all year to ensure students are well prepared for their SOL tests. Reviewing at home provides added support as well. One method of review is to use the SOLPass website link found under Student Resources in the lefthand navigation bar. Additionally, it is always important to have a good night's sleep the evening before and a healthy breakfast the morning of SOL testing. Please ensure your student has two sharpened pencils and arrives to school on time for test days. Also, please note that we cannot disturb classes once testing begins. If your child will be absent on a test day, please let your child's teacher know in advance. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Best of luck, Wildcats!

Summer Art Enrichment Program

What: A two-week enrichment program in the visual arts to provide 2D and 3D experiences with a focus on visual and tactile textures using a variety of art media.
Who: Students interested in the visual arts who have completed grades 2 –8 by June 2010.
When: July 6 –16, 2010 from 9:00 am to noon.
Where: MarstellerMiddle School west of Lake Jackson and SaundersMiddle School east of Lake Jackson.
How: Application materials are available from PWC elementary and middle school art teachers beginning March 1, 2010. Applications and tuition payment must be received by the Office of the Arts for PWCS by 3:00 pm, Friday, May 14, 2010.

Preparing for the 2010-2011 school year

In order for us to plan for the 2010-2011 school year, we are asking all current Buckland Mills families to let us know their intentions for the upcoming school year. We would appreciate it if you could kindly take a moment to complete our "Letter of Intent" form indicating whether or not your current student(s) will be returning as well as if you have a new Kindergarten student coming or even a new student in another grade. These forms were sent home with students; however, you can print another form by clicking here. We appreciate your assistance as we attempt to plan for our staffing needs for next year.

2010-2011 Kindergarten Registration Set

Kindergarten registration for the 2010–11 school year is set for Wednesday, April 14 from 8:00am until 3:00pm and Wednesday, April 28 from 4:30pm until 6:30pm. A list of required items is posted at the Register for School tab on the left. Please review this list for the necessary documentation. Additionally, registration packets will be available in the office beginning Wednesday, April 7. Please take the opportunity to stop by and pick one up - a complete packet will greatly reduce the time required at registration.

Remember that a government issued ID is required for entrance into the school. Please ensure you have one with you when you come for registration as you will need to check-in with the front office before proceeding to registration. Please check this website regularly for any additional updates.

In order to determine the support children need to be successful in school, parents of children who speak or understand a different language, in addition to or instead of American English, will be asked to call one of two Central Registration sites, Coles, 703.791.2727, or Ann Ludwig, 703.491.8432, to make an appointment for an English language evaluation. Beginning April 29, English language learners will be registered and evaluated at Central Registration. Parents will need to call for an appointment.

Transfer Requests Now Accepted

Student transfer requests are now being accepted for the 2010-2011 school year. Please remember that current transfer students must complete a transfer request for the next school year. Transfer requests are available in the office.

Summer School Dates and Registration

Summer School dates have been announced for the Summer of 2010. Elementary Summer School will be held for a 3 week period beginning July 6, 2010 and ending July 23, 2010. July 5, 2010 is a holiday. The Art Enrichment Program is schedule for July 6, 2010 through July 16, 2010. For more information, including a registration form, please click here. School of Excellence Designation

Buckland Mills Elementary is proud to announce that it has once again obtained the designation of School of Excellence for Prince William County Schools. We are extremely proud of our students and teachers. All of their hardwork and planning throughout the year has paid off. Parents, we also salute you in your efforts to provide extended educational opportunities at home. A strong home-school connection is vital to supporting the education of our students.

PTO Information Available

In an effort to keep all Buckland Mills families informed, our PTO has launched an updated webpage. PTO newletters, agendas, and board members' contact information can be found here. To visit the PTO's updated webpage click on Parent Groups at the top of this page and select PTO once the Parent Groups page has opened.
Remember, monthly PTO meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month. These meetings are open to all parents and guardians. Our PTO is always in need of volunteers - no job is too small. In order to receive reminders from our school calendar, please follow these steps:

1. Logon to our SchoolFusion website
2. Scroll down the left side and click on My Personal Settings
3. Click on the Notifications tab
4. Select Setup Daily Digest
5. Choose whether to receive notifications on the day of the event, the day before the event or not at all

Selecting to receive notifications means that any event on our School Calendar will be sent as a reminder to your registered email address. This is a great way to stay connected!
