PTO Message from Principal Balkcom

It is the time of year that the PTO begins the nomination process of officers for the 2014-2015 school year. Most of the current board members are moving on to the Haymarket School in the Fall. As our PTO and BMES move into this transition period it is important that we continue to support the PTO so that we can have all of the wonderful events that the children look forward to. The WATCH DOG program and Fall Festival are two events that need immediate attention.

Please read the PTO Nomination Flyer to see if there is a position that might interest you.   We are also looking for volunteers to lead committees.  Read the PTO Committee list if you are interested.  Please join us at our PTO meeting at 7 PM on May 13, 2014, to share your interest in serving for the 2014-2015 school year!

Message from Principal Balkcom
At the February meeting, our School Board approved the motion:
That the Prince William School Board approve Boundary Plan 1.1B prepared by the “Haymarket Drive” Elementary School Boundary Planning Committee; and ii. Rising fifth grades at the affected schools be permitted to remain at their present elementary school for 2014-2015 school year, providing their own transportation and iii. That all current K-4 students may stay at their current school providing their own transportation if the principal determines that there is space available.
The approved motion does provide an opportunity for a parent to apply for their student(s) to remain at Buckland Mills Elementary on transfer status with all of the agreements that accompany transfer status to include parent transportation. As per Regulation 721-1, all transfer requests will be considered based on available space. The deadline for applicants is April 30, 2014. Please refer to the Principal's Page to learn more.

Challenge 24
You are invited to come support our Challenge 24 math finalists at the competition on Sat., Apr. 26 from 8:15-11:45 at Godwin Middle School.
Transfer Deadline
Did you know transfer students have to reapply every year?  If your child is attending Buckland Mills on transfer for child care reasons, you MUST submit a transfer request for the 2014-2015 school year with a completed verification of child care form before the deadline on April 30, 2014.  The form required for all transfers is available here.

SOL Schedule
It's that time of year again to show that we have met the Virginia Standards of Learning by 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders taking the SOL tests.  Please click the BMES Calendar at the top of this page to see the schedule of SOLs for your grade in May and June.
Science Opportunity for 4th and 5th Grade Girls
Johns Hopkins University and the Society of Women Engineers will introduce girls to engineering and science by offering engaging hands-on projects and career exploration activities for girls in grades 4-8 through the Girls Go Techbridge program from 10:00am to 3:00pm on May 31, in Maryland.  A $10.00 non-refundable fee per female students will need to be paid to reserve your spot and will be used for supplies and lunch. Financial aid is available for students that need it.  Click Here for more details.
BMES Race for the Future
On June 7 at 8 am we will have our annual PTO race to benefit the integration of technology into instruction in every Buckland Mills Elementary classroom.  Registration for the One Mile Fun Run is $20 and for the 5K it's $30.
Attention 5th Grade Parents

Looking for Volunteers

Mrs. Button and our teachers need your help organizing the book room. This is an amazing resource at this school and we want to make it easier for our teachers to quickly find the books they use to provide individualized reading instruction. Volunteers are needed to help scan and enter book titles, along with reading levels into a database.

***If you can help, please contact Holly Murray at holly@spottynet.com for more information. Thank you!

PWC Community Expo
The PWC Community Expo will be held on Sat., May 10 from 11 am - 4 pm at the Pfitzner Stadium Complex.  This event is a great opportuity for families to see what our teachers are teaching and our students are learning in the area of health and physical education.  You can take part in fitness, athletic, and outdoor activities in our community.  Click here for more details.

Watch D.O.G.S.

School of Excellence
We are very proud of our knowledgeable staff and students for receiving the recognition as School of Excellence for 2012-2013.  We would like to thank all of our caring families who supported us in learning and preparing to do our best on homework, classwork, and SOLs.
Code of Behavior
Our 2013-2014 Prince William County Schools Code of Behavior is available here and available in Spanish/Espanol here.  All students are expected to follow the Code of Behavior at school.  Teachers will be exploring the code with classes through discussions and multi-media presentations.
